A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key government projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.
The leader announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his government's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The building of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid pace, beating expectations to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled significant questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party called for an urgent halt in the development and management of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."
In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and management of these strategic initiatives.
